Ending the Season with Creamery Ice Cream and a W

Each year we ship Penn State Berkey Creamery ice cream to Orange County to celebrate the end of the football season and to bring a bit of Penn State closer to our local alumni!

We had a wide variety of flavors to choose from including fan favorites Alumni Swirl, Bittersweet Mint, WPSU Coffee Break, Peachy Paterno, Peanut Butter Swirl, Death By Chocolate, Keeney Beany Chocolate, and a special seasonal flavor Apple Cobbler Crunch.

Thanksgiving Dinners Donated to 430+ Families in OC

As is our chapter tradition, throughout November we collected donations (both food & monetary) for the Orange County Basket Brigade.

Since 1995, this wonderful organization has been helping to provide all the necessities of a Thanksgiving meal which are given to families in need. This year we collected several bags of food (we had two full Trader Joe’s bags from Blue Beet alone) and over $250 from Penn State fans at JT Schmid’s and The Blue Beet.

Our Newport Beach Summer Bar Tour Recap

Written by: Camille Mesite ‘81

Our local Penn State alumni had a great time on our annual Summer Bar Tour in Newport Beach. I took the free Balboa Peninsula Trolley so I wouldn’t have to worry about finding a parking space by the Newport Pier. They started this last summer and I highly recommend it. It’s free to ride, and free to park your car in the parking lot at Tustin St & Avon St, off of PCH in Newport Beach.

We started out at 2 pm at Baja Sharkeez. Only a handful of people were there that early, but by the time we left for the second bar, we were up to 9 people. Some of the early birds were Brian Snyder, Patti & Terry Brennan, and their Penn Stater daughter Caitlyn, visiting from New York. Sharkeez gave us a drink special of buy one, get the second for 50 cents. They also provided a free appetizer platter to share.

A Student Send-Off to Remember

Despite the summer heat, the coolest students throughout Orange County & the Inland Empire had a blast on Sunday, July 29 at this year’s annual Student Send-Off! From as far away as Redlands, Penn Staters and their families converged on Santa Ana filled with both excitement and anxiety about the adventures ahead.

There were 20 students, including incoming Freshman and Upperclassmen from various campuses (including World Campus!), along with mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and friends joining the Nittany Lion extended family. The attendees enjoyed getting to know other students in similar situations, either heading off from home for the first time or leaving loved ones behind for a few months to rejoin East Coast friends again.

The party, generously hosted by Peggy and Dale Quayle, was a celebration of achievement and being a part of one of the most distinguished universities in the country. It also kicks off the next chapter ahead for the young and bright minds that will represent both Penn State and our Chapter’s area.

Giving Back this Earth Day – with Puppies!

On April 22, five OC Penn Staters gathered at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley to pick up trash for Earth Day – while walking our furry friends!

The weather that morning was perfect, and the gang enjoyed a nice leisurely walk through the park, bagging up litter along the way. Throughout the walk, we got to witness golfers and an agility competition, and spotted several animals like ducks, geese, turtles and squirrels.

A Recap of the OC PSU Winter Bar Tour in Orange

It’s not just football season when we get together for fun!  On February 10, 2018, Penn State Alumni, locals, and friends of the University slotted some time to make a trip to The Plaza, the center of Old Town Orange known as ‘The Circle’, for this year’s Winter Bar Tour. The Orange Plaza is a quaint atmosphere lined with clothing, antiques and novelty shops, with many dining and nightclub establishments.  It brings to mind College Ave. on a non-football weekend. Our focus was food and drink and spending time with our OCIEA Chapter family.
